At this point I think most people have realized that the film that wins Best Picture at the Oscars is almost never actually the best picture. Films that celebrate film and films that celebrate America in all its greatness (ahem, Lincoln) seem to trump films of actual quality. Beasts of the Southern Wild is the best picture of the year. Unfortunately, it doesn’t glorify either of the above mentioned categories, meaning it’s the one that should win but inevitably won’t. The film is by far one of the most visually striking and heartwarming films I have ever seen, so much so that I went back three times to see it in theatres. The acting in the film is phenomenal, particularly from Quvenzhané Wallis who is now the youngest person ever to be nominated for Best Actress– and she deserves it. If you only have time to see one nominated film this year, this is the one that will stay with you for years to come.
